HOW TO GET BOOK REVIEWS THAT DRIVE SALES FOR SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS
If you’re a self-published author you know that reviews aren’t just nice to have, they’re essential. Reviews build trust, improve visibility, and help your book stand out in a crowded market. But getting reviews that actually sell books takes strategy, authenticity and persistence.
First, make sure your book is ready for reviews. A clean, professional cover, a compelling description and a well-edited manuscript show you’re serious. Without that foundation your review outreach will fall flat.
Next, leverage your existing network. Reach out to early readers, friends, colleagues and ask if they’d consider leaving an honest review. Make it easy: provide direct links to the review page, tell them how to find the form, and gently remind them after a week or two if they haven’t posted one.
Then widen your reach. Engage with book bloggers and reviewers in your genre. Join relevant reader-groups or forums. Offer free advance reading copies (ARCs) to get early feedback and reviews ahead of launch.
Be smart in your review ask. Don’t beg. Connect by showing genuine interest in the reviewer’s work, emphasise why your book fits their interests, and give them everything they need (cover image, synopsis, review link). That approach is more likely to get a yes.
Use your review momentum to boost sales. Once you’ve got a few solid reviews, highlight them in your book description, author bio, social media and email newsletter. A good review becomes a mini testimonial that builds credibility.
Finally, stay consistent. Collecting reviews is not a one-and-done task. Set up a schedule: monthly reach-outs, quarterly blogger features, periodic check-ins with reviewers. Over time the review count will grow, visibility will improve, and sales will follow.
